I just got back from a jam packed four day trip to Iceland. We went over the Memorial weekend holiday flew out from Portland on Friday Afternoon, arrived into Reykjavik on Saturday and flew home the following Tuesday afternoon. The trip was really memorable one. We rented a car and drove up the west coast and then cut back east to the Northern city of Akureyri. We put over 1500KM (1000miles) on our rental car. It was an amazing road trip, we shot photos of the amazing volcanic landscapes, lighthouses and waterfalls.
One of the most memorable events of the trip actually came on the first day in Reykjavik. Casey set up a helicopter tour for us to fly over and photograph the geothermal hot spots and power plants. I’ve never been in a helicopter before and it was really an awesome experience. Because of the type of tour I had to shoot through the window in the back cab. I shot with three camera. My 5D Mark III with a 70-200 F/4 Lens (which was my main camera), a Lumix GX7 with a medium zoom kit lens, and to go wide I a GoPro Hero 4 with me. Halfway through the flight our pilots (who were awesome) put us down in a clearing near some geothermal springs. We had the whole place to ourself. We walked around the boiling mud pools and heated streams.
I had so much fun shooting from the air I can’t wait to go again! Here are some of my favorite images from the experience (click on the images to resize to fit your screen):
PS…The tour company, Nordurflug Helicopter Tours, was amazing to work with and I couldn’t have been happier. If you are heading to Iceland I highly recommend you check them out. Our pilot Snorri was awesome… I apologize I can’t remember the name of the other pilot…
